The No-Vent Safe Release Weight Story

The concept of a better way to release fish we didn’t want (or couldn’t keep) came about while grouper fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. At that time, a venting tool was required for anyone fishing offshore. I owned such a tool and had become fairly proficient in its use. The only problem was that I didn’t believe we were really saving any fish by venting them. I guess watching the fish disappear down toward the bottom made me feel a little better than watching it flail about on the surface, but this method of relieving barotrauma couldn’t be good for the fish. The venting tool can in no way be described as surgically clean and we were poking it all the way into the fish’s internal organs! I began to wonder about the mortality rates of vented fish.

After we introduce who knows what kinds of bacteria into the fish, do they really survive?
Are they able to avoid predators on the way back down?
How long does it take for that wound to heal?
How long does it take for the fish to get enough air back in the swim bladder for buoyancy control to be regained?
Can the fish capture food?
Can it avoid predators?

There had to be a better way. If I could just quickly sink the fish without poking holes in it, that would work. When adding weight to the fish it quickly descends and recompresses, just like a scuba diver with the bends being put in a re-compression chamber. And so, after several prototypes, the Safe Release Weight was born and No-Vent, LLC was established shortly thereafter by Peter Huebner to manufacture it.

Since introducing the Safe Release Weight in early 2015 there are several out in the fishing world, and the response has been fantastic. So many fishermen and women realize that this sort of conservation will help keep fish populations up, thereby providing our children and grandchildren with the same fishing opportunities we enjoy today. We have had extremely positive feedback as well as had those suggest it works so well, they purchased a second one to keep on hand as a spare!
